Puffins primarily nest on coastal cliffs and islands in the North Atlantic. Key locations include Iceland, Norway, Scotland, and parts of Canada.
Lundey Island, the inspiration for this project, is one such important breeding site.
Appearance
Puffins are small seabirds with black-and-white plumage, bright orange legs, and distinctive triangular beaks that become vibrantly colored during the breeding season.
Behavior
Puffins are strong swimmers, using their wings to “fly” underwater while diving for fish like sand eels.
They are monogamous, often returning to the same mate and nesting site year after year.
Population and Threats
The global population of puffins is around 24–28 million individuals, but they are classified as vulnerable due to climate change, overfishing, and habitat loss.
Fun Fact
Puffins can carry multiple fish in their beaks at once, thanks to their unique serrated beak structure – some puffins have been recorded holding as many as 12 fish at the time.
